Book Review // A Change In The Winds By Nikki Mellado

Updated: Jul 24, 2021

Today, I'm sharing with you another book review. A very good author friend of mine sent me an electronic copy of her book which I read over the Christmas break and I thought I'd review it on here for you all.

Title: A Change In The Winds

Genre: Christian fiction mystery with some romance

Blurb:

Hanika Vienta, a private investigator, knows that the fire was just a cover up for the murder of her parents, and she knows that the killer is still out there. When she takes on a new client, Cameron Banes, she finds a friend, a friend who begins to help her discover the answers she so desperately needs. But as the truth surfaces, so does the danger. And when the threats become all too real, she fears the killer will silence her before she can solve the case. However, in order to find her heart's deepest need, Hanika must first surrender to God, who is all our deepest, whether we know it or not.

I was intrigued by the book blurb and I was looking forward to being taken on a journey with complex characters. I expected twists and turns that would eventually lead me to an expected end, which is seeing the love of God being revealed through all the mystery.

The main character, Hanika, is a 23 year old private investigator who after losing her parents in a fire, purposes in her heart to find the murderer. Even after three years of no concrete evidence being found, Hanika still does not give up and the reader is immediately drawn into her world, and the motivations for her actions.

Hanika then meets Cameron Banes, a paediatrician, and a Christian, who hires her to help him find his birth mother. As their friendship develops, and their bond grows stronger, Hanika opens up to Cameron about the fire, and he assists her with the case. Cameron also introduces Hanika back to God, slowly nudging her to come to church activities and telling her about God.

I loved reading about Hanika’s character arc and I loved seeing her grow from a place of uncertainty in her faith journey, to a place of discovering what heart's deepest need was— Jesus Christ. Her character has a lot of similarities to one of my main characters in the YA Christian fiction I'm writing so it was interesting to see that.

I also loved the mystery aspect of the book. Nikki did a good job by keeping us guessing who the culprit was. I suspected everyone including Cameron himself--even though he was such a good friend to Hanika. I think if it was a longer book, then we would have had more ups and downs, twists and turns, and more trying and failing in their mission.

My favourite characters were Cameron and Hanika. I didn't have a least favourite character as I quite enjoyed all the different characters in the book, and the roles they played. There were some characters like Cameron who I wished could have been explored a bit more but I know Nikki is working on the sequel to the book so hopefully, we will be able to look into the lives of the other characters.

A Change In The Winds teaches us a lot about true love, and it also demonstrates the importance of friends and family, and how God can use the people around us to draw us closer to Him.

Overall, I enjoyed the story and I loved the book. I'd recommend it if you're looking for a fun, fast, easy read which is packed with important lessons and a bit of mystery and romance. You can watch the full review in my YouTube video below.
