A Millennial’s Story of Self-discovery and Faith

Tehillah loses everything in a bomb explosion.

She gets adopted by strangers.

She relocates a thousand seas away from the country of her birth and heart.

And… then ends up with a malicious adoptive sister.

She struggles with culture shocks, low self-esteem, ends up in a dodgy relationship and becomes a single mum.

Will Tehillah find a way to rebuild her life, rediscover her worth, and experience the mercies of a God who loves her more than she can imagine?

Will she ever accept Mrs Ezegwu as her mother? And will she stop seeing Jordan as the shorter, younger boy she could never like?

My Review:

I enjoyed this coming of age novel of Tehillah. I wasn't really sure what to expect going into it but it was a nice surprise. I wasn't aware of the bomb blast that happened in Nigeria in the early 2000s so it was very interesting to read about and the devastating effects it had.

Tehillah's journey was very tumultous and I felt so sorry for her. She went through so much at such a young age and there were so many instances where I wanted to reach out and give her a hug. Having your life drastically change because of tragedy and then being uprooted from your home country into an environment very unfamiliar to you is very scary. It reminded me of how much I had to adjust when I moved to the UK at fifteen years old. The culture shock was a lot to get used to and I can't imagine dealing with that while navigating being in a home where you don't feel loved.

Tehillah's family situation was very frustrating to read and it made me understand why she decided to make the wrong decisions she made. I wish she had handled things differently but I understand it must have been very difficult for her and she was just looking to be where she felt loved and cared for.

I also loved the character Jordan who was a true friend to Tehillah and even though he annoyed me in some scenes by not entirely sticking up for Tehillah, I loved how intentional he was with pursuing Tehillah and helping her on her journey of healing and reconciliation. I also loved to read about how intentional Jordan was with his relationship with God. We definitely need to see more young men on fire for God in young adult fiction.
