Chapter 1
Scripture: Psalm 27:1-5
“It just sucks that one person can make me feel so afraid, so insecure and so weak.”
In this chapter, we meet our first main character, Teeyana Joy Sparks, and we quickly learn that she has been living in fear for a long time. She and her best friend Amara are victims of bullying and Teeyana is so driven by fear that she has allowed it to affect her sense of security. When she comes face to face with her bully, Olivia Hastings, she doesn’t have the courage to do anything but run. The sad thing about this is that Teeyana doesn’t run to God, but she runs away from Him. Through her internal monologue, we can decipher that Teeyana feels weak and has been relying on her own strength. We also see her becoming frustrated that she has not been able to redeem herself so far. Even when Amara tries to reassure her by pointing her back to a solution in God, Teeyana brushes that off quickly.
In Psalm 27, we see King David taking an opposite approach in the way he handles fear. Instead of running away from God like Teeyana, David runs to God and acknowledges the fact that He is the source of his security. David boldly declares that even though the wicked advance against him, or an army besieges him, or war breaks out against him, he will remain confident in who God is and what God can do.
Beloved one, as you go through today, remember that when you are deeply rooted in God, there will be no place for fear. The opposite of fear is faith and I’m not talking about faith in yourself or other human beings, but faith in God. The same God in whom David had so much confidence is the same God you serve today. He loves you.
Journaling Prompt: How do you respond in fearful situations? Do you run to or away from God?
Prayer: Dear Jesus, please help me to always run to You when I feel afraid.
Affirmation: God is the strength of my life. I will not be afraid.
